World-Class Design and Manufacturing for a better WORLD
Founded in 2001 by Jim Boire, RMD Engineering began as a classic Saskatchewan narrative of prairie grit and ingenuity. Jim brought a highly unique perspective to the business, having worked as a Journeyman Machinist before returning to the University of Saskatchewan to earn his Mechanical Engineering degree. He built the company on a strict principle of vertical integration, wanting to blend theoretical engineering design with hands-on fabrication and electrical programming completely under one roof. This approach allowed the team to maintain total control over quality and timelines, starting lean in a modest 1,200-square-foot shop with just three employees.
Over the next two decades, the company scaled significantly by tackling complex engineering challenges that standard fabrication shops turned down. To expand its capabilities, the business evolved into an interconnected ecosystem of sister companies, integrating Saskatoon Machine Works for high-tolerance machining and Scientific Instruments Ltd. for advanced electronics and automation. This multi-disciplinary setup allowed the team to move from standard industrial maintenance into highly precise scientific sectors, leading to landmark projects like building an Elliptical Polarizing Undulator for the Canadian Light Source synchrotron. To house this exploding scope, operations eventually moved to our massive 100,000-square-foot facility in the East Cory Industrial Park, growing the team to over 85 skilled professionals.
To further solidify our concept-to-completion philosophy, we integrated Temple Coatings into our shared industrial ecosystem. By bringing advanced powder coating technology and specialized industrial finishing services completely in-house, we eliminated the need to outsource the final protective and aesthetic stages of production. This addition ensures that every component—from massive structural weldments to fine precision parts—leaves our facility with a durable, high-quality finish that meets our strict internal standards.
The most transformative modern chapter in our history arrived in March 2020 during the onset of the global pandemic. Facing disrupted supply chains and a critical shortage of healthcare equipment, the team pivoted its entire industrial manufacturing capability to design and build an emergency use ventilator in just 42 days. This massive undertaking ultimately secured Health Canada authorization and successfully incubated Saskatchewan's first licensed medical device manufacturer, One Health Medical Technologies. Now operating as a successful alumni company, their journey cemented RMD’s evolution into a premier advanced research, incubation, and manufacturing hub.
As we continue to push the boundaries of what can be designed and built right here in Saskatchewan, we are always looking for experienced, passionate professionals to join our growing team.
